Do licence-free walkie talkies need programming?
Not to work — they run out of the box. Programming is for setting a whole set to matching channels and privacy codes so nobody has to do it by hand.
Can I clone settings across a set?
Yes. Cloning copies one radio's channel setup to the rest, which is the reliable way to keep a team on identical settings.
Are programming cables model-specific?
Yes — both the connector and the software differ by model, so a cable for one radio rarely works with another.
Can I change the frequencies?
On PMR446 you are limited to the 16 licence-free channels. Programming sets which of those you use and the privacy codes, not new frequencies — going outside PMR446 would need a licence.
