Mobile Radios
Mobile radios are fixed two way radios for vehicles, cabs and control rooms, mounted with a roof or external antenna for far greater range than a handheld. They suit fleets, depots and any operation coordinating drivers from a base.
Most are licensed and need an Ofcom Business Radio licence, which we arrange and programme. Hytera, Motorola, Kenwood and Icom all build mobiles; for coverage beyond a single site, compare PoC radios.
Mobile radio FAQs
What is a mobile radio?
A radio fitted permanently in a vehicle, cab or control room, powered by the vehicle and using an external antenna. That antenna is why it reaches much further than a handheld.
Do mobile radios need a licence?
Most do — they run on licensed frequencies and need an Ofcom Business Radio licence, which we arrange and programme before dispatch.
Can a mobile radio talk to handhelds?
Yes, provided they are on the same licensed channels and programmed to match. That is the normal setup for a depot coordinating drivers.
Do I need a professional to fit one?
For anything permanent, yes. Power, earthing and antenna placement all affect performance and vehicle safety, and a poor antenna install wastes most of the benefit.
