Marine Radios
Marine radios keep crews in contact and are core safety kit on the water, from handheld VHF sets to fixed installations with DSC. We supply marine VHF built to survive salt, spray and a soaking.
In the UK a marine VHF set needs an Ofcom Ship Radio Licence (fixed) or Ship Portable Radio Licence (handheld), and the operator needs an RYA Short Range Certificate. Icom is our pick for marine; ask us about the right set and licence for your vessel.
Marine radio FAQs
Do I need a licence for a marine VHF radio?
Yes. In the UK a fixed set needs an Ofcom Ship Radio Licence and a handheld needs a Ship Portable Radio Licence, and the operator needs an RYA Short Range Certificate.
What is DSC?
Digital Selective Calling — it sends a digital distress alert with your vessel identity, and position too if the set is linked to GPS. It is standard on fixed marine sets.
Handheld or fixed marine VHF?
A fixed set with a masthead antenna gives far more range and is the primary safety installation. A handheld is the backup, and useful in a tender or liferaft.
Can I use a normal two way radio at sea?
Not as marine safety kit. Marine VHF uses dedicated international channels monitored by the coastguard, which a business radio cannot access.
